Vets

Ferret vets are very different from your “run-of-the-mill” dog and cat vet.  They are uniquely trained to deal with the various illnesses of ferrets, and can recognize the symptoms of a sick ferret that other vets might not notice.

Ferrets, since they are such small animals with such high metabolisms, can not wait for a vet to “figure out” what might be wrong with a ferret.

Below is a list of ferret vets that we use and can highly recommend for you and your beloved weasels. (they’re good with other critters also).

Pownal Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Katie Erswell
191 Hallowell Road
Pownal, ME 04069
Tel. (207) 688-4843

Website: https://www.pownalvet.com/

Dr. Katie Erswell has been the veterinarian for the Ferret Rescue of Maine since 2003.  She has helped countless ferrets in the shelter over the years providing medical, dental and surgical care.  She owned ferrets for 22 years and has now been practicing as a ferret veterinarian for 20 years and sees ferret owners from all over the state.  She prefers to help owners be proactive about the care for their ferrets by checking for insulinoma and adrenal issues starting at age 4.  This allows us to avoid crisis and help manage the ferret’s health.

Fryeburg Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Steve Caffrey
203 Bridgton Road
Fryeburg, ME 04037
Tel. (207) 935-2244

Dr. Caffrey is a great ferret vet, but is too far away for us to use full time.

He is a great surgeon, very knowledgeable about ferrets and I would highly recommend him.

River Road Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Katherine Carter, DVM
210 River Road
Orrington, ME 04474
Tel. (207) 825-2105

Website: http:/www.riverroadvet.com

While we do not use this vet, they are listed on the American Ferret Assoc. list, so someone must have recommended them.

Plus, they have donated to our shelter in the past.
